Technologies changed through the nineties, and it soon became possible to build steel bikes that were lighter than the original Rodriguez aluminum tandems. We went back to making exclusively steel tandems by custom order only. We decided that we should offer a tandem that was less expensive than a custom. In 1997, we introduced the Rodriguez Toucan production tandem. Rodriguez production tandem frames are different from other production tandems in many ways. First of all, we have analyzed the many fitting sessions from the couples we have measured for the last 30 years and then designed our frame sizes around the most common combinations. Fit wise, we have designed the tandems to be very versatile and easily adaptable to many riders. Hand-built one at a time ensures the frame's alignment as well as the integrity of the joints. Our Toucan frames utilize our exclusive RODRIGUEZ oval top tube, and keel tube combination, making them extremely responsive, as well as comfortable. For 2006, all of our tandems are sold a la carte. Choose a frame, and then choose the components. Add the 2 together, and you've got your full tandem price. We are offering our Test Pilot and Toucan tandem frames 3 sizes, as well as custom sizing for $350 extra. 2006 also brings a new feature for all of our bicycles as well. We are now offering every bike in one of 4 color options (at no extra charge) as well as custom colors for just $150 extra. We are one of the oldest builders of tandems still operating in the United States. We've been building here in Seattle since 1973. You may have seen one of our tandems out on the road. We started as a custom tandem builder, and then in the late 1980's we produced a production line of aluminum mountain bike tandems that really took off for us.
